Workouts 4
Time 158 min
Cycling 38.3 miles
Running 5.6 miles

  • tue: Rehab walk/jog. Ran 2.1 miles. A little better today. About 70 percent easy jog with walk breaks. I sped up a few times to 9:00 pace but could feel my calf start to complain so I slowed down right away.

The sad part is that I can feel that in the last 7 weeks my conditioning has slipped more than I would have liked, even those brief 9:00 mm paces brought my heart rate up too far.

  • wed: Rehab walk/jog. Ran 2.0 miles. This went terrible. My right calf cramped up about a mile out and I had to limp back. I then spent a long time rolling, massaging and stretching but it didn’t really help. I am limping around the office now. Very depressed about the whole thing.
  • thu: Lynnfield-Wakefield-Reading-Andover-Middleton. Rode 38.3 miles for 158 minutes at 14.47 mph. Five town ride, mosty in the pouring rain. Other than that it was a great ride and a much needed long endurance effort. I miss my long runs 🙂
  • sat: Another diaster. Ran 1.5 miles. I attempted a 2 mile walk/jog. My right calf started hurting as soon as I began jogging. I thought.. well maybe coddling this pain is the mistake and I just need to ignore it. a 1/4 mile later I practically fell over from the pain and just sat down on the side of the road. I won’t admit to tearing up in a little pity party sitting there, but I was pretty miserable. I limped home very, very slowly.

Workouts 4
Time 134 min
Cycling 36.3 miles
Running 3.5 miles

  • wed: Cycling workout. Rode 20.8 miles for 77 minutes at 16.00 mph. It felt good to do something that got the heart pumping. Being sidelined from running has depressed me, so I treated myself to a new bike. Trek Madone 5.2. I was fitted last week when I picked it up, but I wasn’t healthy enough to ride until today. It felt like a dream! It is hard to explain, but this bike is so much better than my Novara Divano it is like flying compared to walking. My goal is to take swimming lessons this winter (I swim very badly) and then do my first triathlon in the Spring.
  • fri: Rehab walk / Jog. Ran 2.0 miles. 1 mile walk followed by 100 yard jogs / walks. Right calf started cramping on 2nd 100 yard jog. Walked rest of the way home.
  • sun: Rehab walk/jog. Ran 1.5 miles. Half mile walk followed by 100 yard jog /walk combos. Right calf felt tight but did not cramp. Finished feeling in better spirits. did half hour of rolling and stretching.
  • sun: Lynnfield-Wakefield-Reading-Loop. Rode 15.5 miles for 56 minutes at 16.46 mph. Great day for a cycle! Didn’t have time for the longer route so did the shorter. Some more hills in this route than the other. Saw lots of runners and paced them briefly to tell them about the new running club and the website. Most seemed interested… only one old guy was less than pleasant.. “I don’t know you” he gruffly told me. LOL.

Workouts 3
Time 81 min
Cycling 12.1 miles
Running 7.5 miles

  • tue: Locksley-Essex out and back. Ran 4.2 miles. Rehab run. Turns out I did not pull a muscle in my calf. I had a set of deep knots that would basically spasm and cramp when I would run. I think I must have been dehydrated last week, plus the 104 degrees mostly caused the issue. Had a deep tissue sports massage last night which made me cry like a baby. But she got the knots out and I was able to run/walk/stretch today.
  • wed: Almost Recovered. Ran 3.3 miles for 31 minutes at 9:27 pace. Calf is still very stiff but managable. I think I am on the road to recovery. I will not run until Sat’s long run to give it 2 extra days.
  • thu: Lynnfield and Peabody Bikepath. Rode 12.1 miles for 50 minutes at 14.52 mph. What a wonderful, gorgeous day for a ride! Gave my calf a rest and strapped myself to my cycle rocket for some cruising.
